"Anti-cancer Properties

Nigella sativa contains a chemical called thymoquinone that is said to have anti-cancer effects. A 2011 study published in "Cell Biology International" found that thymoquinone has an additive effect on cell destruction when combined with radiation therapy for breast adenocarcinoma and ductal carcinoma. If you have cancer, do not take Nigella sativa without first talking to your doctor, because it may interact with medications. It can also have effects on your platelets, which help with blood clotting, says Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. This can be dangerous if you are on certain cancer medications

Actually, I think a lot of natural remedies/agents that kill cancer cells can have an effect on your "regular" medication: if it isn't active in your body, it can't kill cancer cells; the way those remedies do that may influence your medication.

Hope the more biologically inclined chip in if this is wrong...

However, if your oncologist okays it, you can always try...

Expert warns against random use of herbal products

RIYADH – A random use of herbal products can prove dangerous, an expert has warned here Thursday.

Dr. Muhammad Bin Abdullah Al-Tefail, head of the Depatment of Pharmacology and Herbs at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center here, said an analyses on complementary and alternative medicine showed that 38 million adults in the US only used natural herbs or supplements in the preceding 12 months.

Dr. Al-Tefail was delivering a lecture here within the activities of Saudi Aramco’s Summer Festival in the capital.

The objective of the study, he said, was to determine subpopulation rates of patients-physicians communication about herbal product and use of natural supplements. Besides, it was meant to identify the relative influence of the interaction factors associated with patient-physician communication about herb and supplement use.

The study, he said, showed the imminent risks of some of the bogus herbal products in the market.

In his lecture entitled, “Herbs Utilizations and Restrictions,” Dr. Al-Tefail highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of different herbs and their ideal utilization methods.

Black caraway (nigella sativa), ginger and olive oil and some other herbs are useful for women during pregnancy and post-pregnancy as well as for diabetic people and those suffering from high cholesterol, he said.

He said medical herbs are used in pharmaceutical industry where chemists and pharmacists extract the ingredients from herbs. The pharmacists dispense the final products to patients.

Thus he warned the public about herbs provided by perfumeries and herbalists because they are not purified and contain dangerous components. The herbalist usually mix the herbs with other components which are distinguished by high toxicity which causes great damage to the organs, Dr. Al-Tefail said.

Referring to a study, the expert said it was encouraging to find more and more patients are now using herbs and other supplements for treatment of chronic cases. Here too the expert has a word of caution: the physicians regularly treating the patients should be informed of the use of herbs and supplements since it could be dangerous if they are being taken alongside the traditional medicines. – SG/SPA __

Nigella Sativa for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Overview

Some individuals find complementary and alternative medicines are beneficial supplements to their prescribed treatments for a variety of conditions. Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis may find the supplement Nigella sativa helpful for symptoms, but it may not be effective or appropriate for everyone. Before using any supplement, talk with your doctor about whether it is safe for you to consume.

Nigella Sativa

Nigella sativa is also known as black cumin, and in addition to being used in traditional medicine, it is also a spice. According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, this plant and its seeds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties. It may also be helpful in treating diarrhea, asthma and high blood pressure. More research needs to be done on the full health properties of Nigella sativa, so talk with your doctor before using this supplement to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you to take.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, commonly called RA, is an autoimmune form of inflammatory arthritis, states the Arthritis Foundation. This means your own body attacks its tissues, and in RA, the membranes lining the joints called synovium are attacked, causing pain and inflammation. This pain and swelling can then spread throughout the body. RA cannot be cured, but medication can help control the condition. If it is caught and treated early enough, permanent joint damage may be avoided and the chances of remission are high, says the Arthritis Foundation. Medications may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs; corticosteroids; biologic agents and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, called DMARDs. While these cannot get rid of RA, different drugs can ease symptoms and slow the progression of the condition.

Nigella Sativa Effects

A compound called thymoquinone can be derived from the seeds of Nigella sativa, and studies show this substance helps decrease inflammation, a key symptom in RA. A 2011 study in the "Journal of Cellular Biochemistry" found that rats with induced RA that were treated with thymoquinone had decreased arthritis scoring and bone resorption. A 2007 study in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" found that rats that were given thymoquinone suppressed the induced RA, compared to rats who did not get the thymoquinone. Research with human subjects still needs to be done, and this compound may not work for everyone. Ask your doctor whether Nigella sativa may have any benefits for your situation.

Souq shopkeeper's life is rich in spice

Jul 25, 2011

Charles Crowell / The National

DUBAI // After a quick glance, Hassan Abdulraheem can usually guess why a particular customer has come into his shop.

"Something for digestion?" the Emirati asks a middle-aged construction worker from Pakistan in Urdu.

Mr Abdulraheem, 50, who can speak what he calls "the trade languages" of Hindi, Urdu and Arabic, picks out a packet of "al Haloul" tea, or senna, from hundreds of colourful and fragrant piles of spices, herbs and oils.

"It is quite effective in cases of constipation," he says.

For more than 35 years, Mr Abdulraheem has been running his family spice and herb shop, Mohammed Ali Abbas Trading. The store has been passed down from generation to generation and is as old as the souq in which it stands.

At more than 100 years old, the Deira Souq is in the heart of Dubai and just a few steps from rows of merchant dhows docked along the shores of the Dubai Creek.

To find Mr Abdulraheem's store with its traditional remedies for ailments of all kinds, particularly those brought on by the heat, one must simply follow their nose.

The spice and herb section of the souq is a testament to the area's history as an important stopover en route to the "Spice Road".

"The spice route was actually more of a water route, with spices and herbs transported via the seas on dhows from the east to the west," says Dr Hasan Al Naboodah, an Emirati historian and the dean of libraries at the UAE University in Al Ain. "It was quite an aromatic route."

In the past, sailors, pearl divers and fishermen would always stop at the spice and herb souq to stock up on items that would protect them against dehydration, skin problems, digestion and fever at sea.

Among those supplies was "halteet", or asafoetida, a spice with a strong, unpleasant smell. It aids circulation and treats intestinal upsets. Its scent is in stark contrast to the aromatic "al murr" or myrrh, a natural antibiotic for injuries and skin.

Mr Abdulraheem learnt about popular local antidotes through his trade and by experimenting with various ingredients on himself. He has come up with some unique concoctions.

"Our local medicine has influences from the traditional Islamic medicine," he says.

One seed found in every local home is the "al haba al souda" or "habat al baraka". Simply known as the black seed, it includes the Nigella sativa, black cumin and kalonji.

The Prophet Mohammed said: "Black seed is a cure for every disease except death."

With Ramadan just around the corner, spice and herb prices are expected to rise as people become creative in the kitchen for iftar.

Recently at the souq, Umm Mohammed Al Ali, an Emirati, accompanied Umm Mohammed Al Baloushi, from Oman, using one of their wheelchairs as a shopping trolley for their purchases.

The two housewives were stocking up on saffron, which is considered one of the most expensive spices in the world, costing at least Dh10 for 1 gram. Saffron doubles in price during Ramadan as it is the core ingredient in local rice dishes and several types of desserts.

"We love shopping around for ingredients for the kitchen. It refreshes us and inspires us to look for unique spices and herbs," says Mrs Al Ali, who chooses to walk around the souq, giving up her wheelchair for the day.
Mr Abdulraheem points out various textures and colours of supplies that are quite popular locally but are not universally known.
The include "ain al afreet", which is red cherry-like incense believed to ward off the Jinn, or genies, and the evil eye.
"There is a cure for everything, even diabetic people can make use of nature's remedies," he says, holding up a bottle of a special tonic, "al sukkari water". Made in Bahrain, it is said to regulate blood sugar.

Yet there are some remedies Mr Abdulraheem shies away from prescribing.

When a gentleman in his 80s asks for "something that would help me to make my wife happy", Mr Abdulraheem simply smiles and recommends: "Saffron tea and a bit of poetry." Next page

Herbal Healer: What is nigella sativa?

By Ted PanDeva Zagar Times Correspondent nwitimes.com
Posted: Thursday, July 28, 2011 12:00 am

Virtually unknown in Western medicine, nigella sativa is so well regarded in Asia, Africa and the Middle East that a popular belief holds that this herb is a panacea for everything except aging and death. Also commonly known as blackseed-specimens of the tiny seed have been found in Pharaoh Tutanhkamun's tomb to promote wellness in the next life-nigella sativa has a lengthy history as both an herb and a food.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Nigella sativa seeds can be used raw or cooked to flavor breads, pickles, cakes and countless other dishes. Eaten in this manner, the spicy seed also provides relief from stomach and intestinal pains, bloating and colic. Women in India use the seeds to increase breast milk -- and even breast size! -- and to treat menstrual disorders. In 2007, scientists reported that thymoquinone -- an active compound discovered in nigella sativa -- holds much promise in treating prostate cancer and may even help to prevent this common male affliction. The seed is an effective enemy of parasitic worms.

ABOUT THE HERB

Native to south and southwest Asia, nigella sativa is an annual flowering plant hailing from the buttercup family. Delicate pale blue or white flowers bearing five to ten petals produce an inflated fruit that contains the much sought-after seeds.

RECOMMENDED DOSAGE

Replace the pepper in your shaker with nigella sativa's aromatic seeds and sprinkle them over your salad or soup. Place the finely scented seeds in a muslin bag to hang near a fire, and this will fill the room with a delightful aroma. Avoid heavy use of nigella sativa during pregnancy.

Effects Of Different Preparations Of Nigella Sativa (ns) On Glucose And Lipid Metabolism In Type II Diabetic Patients

Bilal, Ahmad (2008) Effects Of Different Preparations Of Nigella Sativa (ns) On Glucose And Lipid Metabolism In Type II Diabetic Patients. PhD thesis, University of Arid Agriculture, Rawalpindi.

Abstract

The basic aim of this placebo control study was to investigate the effects of three different preparations of Nigella sativa especially on glucose and lipid metabolism in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) patients (group-A); however normal individuals (group- B) was also studied. Both groups were treated with N. sativa Seed Powder (NsP), N. sativa Aqueous Extract (NsE) and N. sativa Oil (NsO), in addition to a placebo in phases 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Each phase was of 80 days (40 days of treatment with N. sativa preparation followed by 40 days of placebo administration). Levels of 0 day were taken as base line (concurrent control) in each phase. Fasting blood levels of glucose, insulin, total cholesterol (TC), LDL & HDL cholesterols, triglycerides (TG), total leukocyte & platelet counts, hepatic profile and blood urea were determined in subjects of both groups on 0, 40 and 80th day of each phase of the study. In phase-1 a highly significant fall in fasting blood glucose, TC, LDL cholesterol and TG while an increase in insulin and HDL was observed in group-A after treatment with NsP as compared to concurrent control. These levels significantly reversed at the end of placebo except the HDL cholesterol. Almost similar results were obtained in subjects of group-B. In phase-2 although a decrease in glucose and increase in insulin levels was observed in group-A after treatment with NsE; which reversed after the placebo yet the changes were not significant. However a significant fall was observed in TC and TG levels of diabetics after NsE treatment; which reversed after the placebo significantly in TG but insignificantly in TC. In group B, results regarding glucose and insulin levels were similar to that of group-A of this phase. Concerning lipid profile, a significant fall in TG and insignificant decrease in TC and LDL cholesterol was observed after NsE treatment. The changes reversed after the placebo, significantly in TG and LDL cholesterol but insignificantly in TC. In phase-3, a significant fall in fasting blood glucose and a rise in insulin levels was observed in group-A after treatment with NsO as compared to concurrent control levels. A significant decrease in LDL & increase in HDL was observed while TC remained statistically unchanged; however a significant increase was also recorded in TG after NsO treatment. LDL and TG levels reversed significantly, while no significant change was observed in HDL and TC levels after the placebo. Subjects of group-B behaved similar to group-A, as for glucose and insulin are concerned. Regarding lipids, a decrease in LDL cholesterol (significant) and TC (insignificant) while increase in HDL cholesterol and TG (insignificant) was observed in group-B after the use of NsO. LDL and TC increased significantly after the placebo while no significant change was recorded in HDL cholesterol and TG. Total leukocyte and platelet counts remained statistically unchanged in both groups A and B, when treated with NsP, NsE, NsO or administered with placeboes in phases 1, 2 and 3 respectively as compared to their base line levels Similarly no unpleasant effect of any of the N. sativa preparation was observed regarding hepatic profile, blood urea and the subjective feelings of the diabetic and normal individuals. In the light of foregoing facts it can safely be concluded that all preparations of N. sativa had some or more antidiabetic effect. However keeping in view the overall performance, NsP was found more effective. Further large scale human studies with different dose schedules of NsP are recommended.

Fight diabetes with nature's food

By AFRA NAUSHAD, LIFE.STYLE@ARABNEWS.COM
Published: Jul 6, 2011 09:10 Updated: Jul 6, 2011 09:10

Suffering from diabetes means no sweet treats, literally! But, don’t let that prevent you from enjoying the greatest mercies in the form of natural foods that have been proffered to us as miracle ingredients.

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases where the person suffers from above-normal levels of blood glucose, either due to insufficient production of insulin, total insensitivity of the cells in the body to respond to it, or complete inability to produce it. Insulin being the prime hormone regulating blood glucose levels, the solution to treat the disease translates into creating a bodily system more receptive to the hormone or activating it to produce insulin depending on the type of diabetes.

Most diabetics struggle with diet plans in a bid to keep tabs on their blood glucose levels that often fluctuate. Consider making these simple foods a part of your daily diet plan that has yielded remarkable results in the medical research field.

Onions: no more tears

Onions have been recognized for centuries for their wide range of medicinal properties. The ancient pharaohs fed it to their workers entrusted with building the pyramids to give them strength. For the control of blood-sugar levels, research reveals that onions should be ingested in the natural raw form for maximum benefit. Onions contain a high concentration of the flavonoid Quercetin — known to decrease the glucose levels. Whether used as an additive during cooking, in concentrated forms, or eaten raw, it offers all of its healthy properties. Just be careful not to spew the pungent odors upon your peers!

Chase the gingerbread man

Some doctors have recommended drinking ginger in water first thing in the morning to help regulate blood glucose levels. Ginger is also mentioned in the Qur’an as a drink for the pious ones in paradise (Qur’an 76:17). Gingerol, a powerful antioxidant is found to interrupt a pathway responsible for the activation of a factor involved in diabetes. Studies have also revealed that health complications like diabetic retinopathy have been greatly reduced with the concoction.

Holy basil

Widely used in Italian dishes — pastas, sauces and salad dressings — basil is mentioned in the Qur’an as a gift to mankind. Some studies have shown basil to reduce fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. An excellent recommendation would be to drink basil tea regularly after each meal. To prepare an infusion, add 1-2 teaspoons of shredded basil leaves to 250 ml of water, boil, allow the tea to infuse in the leaves for 2 minutes and consume the tea unsweetened.

They concluded that a healthy immune system will detect and destroy cancer cells before the cancer endangers the patient. The immune system does this by supporting increased production of immune cells, bone marrow cells, and B-cells that produce antibodies. Black cumin stimulates neutrophil activity. These are the short-lived immune cells that are normally found in bone marrow but mobilized into action when there is a bacterial infection. Extracts of black cumin have also been shown to modulate production of interleukins, a quality it shares with some other highly revered herbs: ginseng, astragalus, mistletoe, garlic, and cat’s claw.
