Nigella Sativa & Asthma

Nigella Sativa & Asthma

Overview

If you suffer from asthma, using nigella sativa as a complementary treatment may help to improve your symptoms. Nigella sativa, also known as black cumin or kalanji, is a medicinal spice that has been used in African, Middle Eastern, European, Asian and Indian herbal medicine and cooking for thousands of years. Medical research is now supporting many of the folk uses of nigella sativa, including the treatment of lung problems, allergies and asthma. Talk with your doctor and registered medical herbalist to determine if nigella sativa is right for you.

Bronchodilation

Nigella sativa has a specific antiasthmatic action in humans, working directly on the lungs to open up air passages. In a study published in "Phytomedicine" in 2010, researchers from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran discovered that nigella sativa was significantly effective in reducing the asthmatic symptoms in 15 patients. Nigella sativa improved the results of all pulmonary function tests in the treated patients, indicating that the plant may work in the same way as bronchodilatory drugs. However, compared to pharmaceutical medications, the effects of nigella sativa extract are only mild to modest in strength. Talk with your physician before combining nigella sativa with prescribed bronchodilators, as it may potentiate their action.

Lung Inflammation

When you suffer from an attack of asthma, the release of immune and inflammatory chemicals in the lungs causes constriction and inflammation to occur. However, when taking nigella sativa, the hyper-responsiveness of the immune system is dampened. In a study published in "The Journal of Ethnopharmacology" in 2011, researchers from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran treated guinea pigs with nigella sativa to test the effect of the plant on the lung tissues and immune system. Nigella sativa prevented inflammation and reduced immune responsiveness in lung tissues of the animals by suppressing the expression of white blood cells and inflammatory chemicals.

Allergies

In a review of research published in "Phytotherapy Research" in 2003, researchers compared the results of four studies using nigella sativa to treat 152 patients with allergies. People treated with nigella sativa noticed a significant difference in their symptoms, regardless of whether they suffered from asthma, eczema or hay fever. Nigella sativa also had a mild positive effect on triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels. While researchers do not know precisely how this plant works, it is clear that nigella sativa has a significant antiallergy action that benefits a wide range of allergy sufferers.

Safety and Toxicity

According to Drug Information Online, nigella sativa is considered safe, nontoxic and well-tolerated by the majority of the population. Some cases of adverse reactions have been reported, but these have been from the topical use of the nigella sativa seed oil. No drug interactions are currently known, but you should always check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining herbal remedies with prescription medications.

Effects of Nigella Sativa and Albendazole alone and in combination in Toxocara Canis infected mice

Abstract

Objective: Nigella sativa extract has been used in the Middle East as a traditional medicine for several complaints. We aimed to evaluate the biochemical, histopathological and hematologic changes in Toxocara canis-infected mice after treatment with Nigella sativa extract, albendazole or a combination of both.

Methods: This comparative study was conducted between June and July 2008 at the Itarran University Saniturla Turkey. Sixty healthy adult BALB/c male mice were randomly divided into six groups (D0-D5). Mice in groups D1-D5 received 500 embryonated T. canis eggs via esophageal tube. Groups D0 and D1 served as a non-infected sham group and an infected control group, respectively. Groups D2 and D3 received 100 and 200 mg/kg N. sativa extract (NSE), respectively. Group D4 received 100 mg/kg albendazole. Group D5 received the combination dose (100+100 mg/kg NSE+albendazole).

Results: Treatment with N. sativa of both doses or the combination dose of N. sativa and albendazole reduced the degree of inflammation and necrosis, lead to a reduction in the percentage of eosinophils and decreased the elevated liver enzyme levels.

Conclusion: These results indicate that N. sativa has a potent effect in protection against organ damage induced by T. canis infection.

Introduction
Herbal medicines are used for treatment of many clinical diseases, but little is known about their mode of action. In recent years, Nigella sativa L (Family Ranunculaceae) has been used in the Middle East as a traditional medicine for many complaints.1 The majority of research has focused on its antifungal, antibacterial, antihelminthic, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects.2-6 Toxocariasis is a zoonotic disease caused by ingestion of embryonated eggs of the roundworm Toxocara canis of which the adult form inhabits the small intestine of infected dogs. About 100% of puppies have ascarid infections during the first 3 weeks of life and 50% at 4 months. During this period, puppies excrete billions of ascarid eggs.7 Mammals, including rabbits, rats, mice and monkeys, serve as paratenic hosts. Humans are infected accidentally by ingestion of the embryonated eggs, resulting in visceral larva migrans (VLM) or ocular larva migrans (OLM).8 Experimentally, mice infection results from ingestion of the second stage of the larvae.9 The second stage larvae hatch in the stomach of the mouse and invade whole small intestine within 2 hours.10 The larvae reach the liver and lungs within the first 2-3 days, then the muscular system and brain 7 days after infection. The larvae produce antigen, enzymes and cuticle components which eventually cause tissue damage, necrosis and inflammatory reactions that lead to an increase in eosinophil count.11

No specific drug for the treatment of VLM and OLM has been investigated in well-controlled studies.3 However, a number of other studies concerning the effects of several antihelminthic drugs on human or experimental animal models have been conducted, using different therapeutic procedures. The drugs available for the treatment of toxocariasis presenting as VLM is limited to albendazole, tiabendazole, tinidazole and diethylcarbamazine.12,13

Considering the side effects of these drugs we focused on traditional medicine Nigella sativa with the aim to evaluate the biochemical, histopathological and haematologic changes in T. canis-infected mice after treatment with N. sativa, albendazole or a combination of both.

Methods

Animals Design:

A total of 60 healthy adult male BALB/c mice weighing 32 ± 2 g were maintained in accordance with the National Institutes of Health Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Animals were obtained from Istanbul University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology. Animals were housed individually in polypropylene cages under environmentally controlled conditions (room temperature 22 ± 2°C, humidity 60% and 12/12 light/dark cycle) with free access to standard rodent food (Ankara pellet feed factory, Ankara, Turkey) and water for duration of the study. The Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of Harran University approved animal protocols in advance before the experiment begun. The mice were acclimatized to the laboratory conditions 2 weeks prior to the experiment.

Egg Collection and Preparation:

T. canis worms were collected from naturally infected puppies (taken from a dog shelter in Sanliurfa). The embryonated eggs were removed by dissection of the uteri of the worms according to a method described by Bowman et al.14 The eggs were diluted with 10% gum arabic suspension to achieve 500 embryonated eggs in 1 ml of suspension.

Plant Material and Drug Preparation:

N. sativa seeds were purchased from a local herbal shop in Sanliurfa Turkey. The seeds were cleaned, washed, dried and grounded into fine powder using an electrical mill. The powder was macerated in methanol for 24 hours and then evaporated in a rotary evaporator and dried by lyophilization. Two different doses of extract were prepared (100 and 200 mg/kg bodyweight) and suspended in 10% gum arabic (Merck, Chemical Company, Darmstadt, Germany). Albendazole was purchased from Sigma (St. Louis, MO, USA) and dissolved in 1% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), prepared as 100 mg/kg bodyweight and suspended in 10% gum arabic.

Experimental Conditions:

A total of 60 healthy adult BALB/c male mice were randomly divided into six groups (n=10). Groups D0 and D1 received orally 1 ml of vehicle (10% gum arabic suspension) and served as a non-infected sham group and an infected control group, respectively. Mice in groups D1-D5 received 500 embryonated T. canis eggs via esophageal tube. The treatment was given at 24 hours post-infection in groups D2-D5. Groups D2 and D3 received 100 and 200 mg/kg bodyweight N. sativa extract, respectively. Group D4 received 100 mg/kg bodyweight albendazole. Group D5 received the combination dose (100 mg/kg bodyweight N. sativa extract+100 mg/kg bodyweight albendazole). The treatment was given for 7 consecutive days to all groups.

At the end of the experiment, all animals were killed by cervical dislocation, and their liver, lungs, brain and muscles were removed. Each liver was weighed on an analytical balance and divided into two portions; one portion was used for histopathological examination.

Worm Recovery and Larvae Count:

The left lung, one portion of liver and muscles were finely minced. The larvae were recovered according to the method described by Parsons and Grieve15 with little modification. The tissues were weighed and then digested individually in pepsin-HCl solution (pH 1-2, 500 IU pepsin/g tissue) (Sigma-Aldrich, Hyderabad, India) and incubated for 3 hours at 37°C with periodic agitation. Cellular debris was removed after centrifugation. Subsequently, the sedimentation of particles in liquid were poured into a centrifuge tube and stored in a refrigerator at 4°C for 24 hours. The sediment liquid was centrifuged for 2 minutes at 1500 rpm and 2 ml of the sediment was collected and vortexed. Larvae in the sediment were counted under a light stereomicroscope. The brain of each mouse was removed, minced into small pieces, macerated carefully between two slides to ensure a thin layer, and the larvae were counted under a light microscope.

Histological Examination:

Organs, including the liver and lungs, were removed, washed with physiologic solution and fixed separately in neutral formaldehyde overnight, dehydrated in graded ethanol, cleared in xylene, and processed in ParaplastR (Fluka Chemika AG Buchs, Switzerland) at 58°C. 4-5 µm-thick sections were prepared and stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Three slides were prepared for each tissue and randomly selected for examination by a blinded pathologist. The gross necrotic lesions were histologically identified as large, subcapsular eosinophilic areas of necrotic hepatocytes. Inflammatory foci were defined as discrete clusters of 10 to 80 individual, small, nucleated cells visible throughout the liver. The site of inflammation was taken into consideration only if well-defined lesions and inflammatory foci were present. The degree of inflammation or damage was scored and categorized into four levels: normal (0), no inflammation; mild (1+), <3 foci/area; moderate (2+), 3-6 foci/area and severe (3+), >6 foci/area. Three slides were evaluated for each animal. The mean of all the individual scores was calculated and used for analysis.

Serum Enzyme Analysis:

Blood was collected from all animals under ether anaesthesia, and by heart puncturing according to the procedure approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The blood samples were allowed to clot at room temperature. Serum was separated by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 10-15 minutes and utilized for the measurement of biochemical parameters. Assay kits for the measurement of serum enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were purchased from Randox Laboratories Ltd (Ardmore, Crumlin, UK). Measurements were performed with a UV spectrophotometer in accordance with the manufacturer\'s instructions.

Statistical Analysis:

Inter-group comparisons were conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn\'s multiple comparison of means test. All results are presented as mean±SD. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

The total larval burden in the infected control group D1 was 61. Burden was 28 in the examined lungs (45.9%), 18 in liver (29.5%), 12 in the carcass (19.7%) and 3 in brain (4.9%). Treatment with N. sativa alone reduced the total larval burden to 42 and 37 in groups D2 and D3, which indicated a percentage reduction of 31.1% and 39.3%, respectively, compared with the control group D1 (P<0.05). On the other hand, in group D4 treatment with albendazole alone reduced larval burden to 18, which indicated a percentage reduction of 70.5%. Treatment with the combination of albendazole and N. sativa in group D5 reduced the larval burden to 8, which indicated a percentage reduction of 87%. Significant difference was observed between the treated groups (D4-D5) and the control infected group (D1) (p<0.01).

Percentage of eosinophils in control group was six-fold higher than in sham group. Treatment with N. sativa at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg reduced the eosinophil percentage from 18% to 7.1% and 7.0%, respectively, while treatment with albendazole alone decreased the percentage of eosinophils to 7.8%. Treatment with the combination of albendazole and N. sativa reduced the percentage of eosinophils to 6.6%.

The histopathological changes observed in the lung and liver sections of the control group compared with the sham group are shown in Figures 1A and B and Figures 2A and B. Histopathological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver (Figure 1A). Severe inflammation and bleeding associated with massive infiltration of inflammatory cells into the interstitial and alveolar tissues was observed in lung parenchyma (Figure 2A). Determination of pathogenicity assessed by inflammatory as well as histopathological changes revealed that T. canis larvae were able to induce varying degrees of histopathological changes in the host organs. Mild (1+) and, moderate (2+) to severe (3+) histopathological changes were observed in the brain, lung and liver of infected mice. Significant difference between the infected control (D1) group and non-infected sham (D0) group were observed with respect to histological changes in brain, lung and liver (p<0.05). Treatment with N. sativa alone decreased the degree of damage and the degree of inflammation in the brain, liver and lung, in a dose-dependent manner. There was significant difference between the N. sativa treated groups (D2-D3) and the control infected group (D1) regarding the histological changes in brain, lung and liver (p<0.05).

Treatment with Albendazole alone also reduced the degree of damage and necrosis compared with T. canis-infected mice tissues.Significant difference between the Albendazole treated group (D4) and infected control (D1) group were observed with respect to histological changes in brain, lung and liver (p<0.05). Moreover, treatment with the combination dose of N. sativa and albendazole reduced the degree of necrosis and inflammation and resulted in a reduction in the percentage of eosinophils (Figures 1 and 2).

There was significant difference between the combination dose of N. sativa and albendazole treated group (D5) and the control infected group (D1) regarding the histological changes in brain, lung and liver (p<0.05).

The results with regard to the effects on serum levels of liver enzymes including ALT, AST and ALP are presented in Table. It was found that infection with T. canis in D1-D5 groups elevated the liver enzymes of ALT, AST and ALP when compared with the non-infected group (D0). A significant increase in serum levels of ALT and AST was found in control infected group (D1) compared with the non-infected group (p <0.01). No significant difference was found between the infected control and non-infected groups regarding serum level of ALP (p >0.05).

Treatment with N. sativa with 100mg/Kg and 200mg/Kg were observed to reduce serum liver enzyme levels as compared to infected control group and albendazole alone treated group Treatment with combination dose markedly prevented the elevation of liver enzymes. Liver enzyme levels of ALT and AST in the treated groups (D2-D5) were significantly lower compared with the infected control group (p <0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.01, respectively) (Table).

However, no significant difference was found between the treated groups and infected control group regarding serum level of ALP (p >0.05). Also, there was no significant difference between the treated groups and the non-infected sham group regarding serum levels of ALT, AST and ALP (p >0.05).

Discussion

T. canis is considered to be primarily responsible for VLM and OLM. The route of larval migration in the experimental mouse can be divided into an early hepatopulmonary or visceral phase during the first week after infection, followed by a brain, heart and kidney phase.10 Hepatic damage resulting from T. canis larvae infection is of major importance among liver diseases worldwide.15 Previous work by Lai et al.16 demonstrated that larval antigens are primarily responsible for host inflammatory reactions associated with the infection. The larvae in the liver, elicit T-lymphocyte responses leading to macrophage activation, which seem to play a role in phagocytic removal of unwanted debris at the site of inflammation.16,17 The severity of the disease is determined by the extent of inflammation and amount of larval debris deposited in the tissues.17 In our study, elevated serum levels of AST, ALT and ALP were observed in all infected groups (D1-D5). This seems to be associated with damage of hepatic tissue and impaired cell membrane permeability or is due to deposition of T. canis larvae in tissues. The present study showed reduction of larval burden in treatment groups by both doses of N. sativa (D2, D3) was 31.1% and 39.3%, respectively compared with infected control group (D1). Also, the treatment reduced the degree of damage and inflammation in the liver and the percentage of eosinophils, in comparison to the T. canis-infected control group. The changes observed in the percentage of circulating eosinophils indicated that eosinophil count is an important index of parasite infection and parasitic incidence. Albendazole has been shown to be effective in ocular and visceral larval infections.18,19 The proven efficacy of albendazole in such infections is associated with its nematicidal activity, though the individual immunity has an important role in the response to T. canis infection. Moreover, the hexane extract of C. ambrosioides which is a herbal medicine has been reported to have an anthelmintic activity in vitro by reducing the inflammatory reaction produced by the infection of T. canis larvae in vivo.20

The enhanced liver functions as reflected by a significant decrease in elevated serum levels of the enzymes ALT and AST after treatment with albendazole alone or combination treatment of albendazole and N. Sativa in the present study supports previous studies reporting the efficacy of albendazole in T. canis infections.

On the other hand, the effect of N. sativa extract can be partially attributed to modulation of immune response via a variety of inflammatory mediators, of which expression has been shown to be increased in response to T. canis infection.21 Many researchers have studied the effects of N. sativa or its derived thymoquinone on the immune system, and found that the extract stimulates the production of some certain cytokines, and leads to alterations in the levels of these mediators.22,23 It has been stated recently that Nigella sativa and thymoquinone have a therapeutic and protective effect by decreasing oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.3 Moreover, N. sativa has been reported to have a stimulatory effect on human lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocyte phagocytic activity.24 It has also been suggested that fixed oil of N. sativa inhibits the generation of eicosanoides which play an important role in inflammation.25 We suggest that the decrease in the degree of inflammation observed in both liver and lungs of mice treated with N. sativa might be associated with this anti-eicosanoid activity.

In the present study, larval recovery levels in larval toxocariasis were higher in liver and lungs and lower in muscles and brain on day 7 after infection, which is in line with a study by Lai et al.16 This result may be attributable to proteolytic activity of enzymes produced by larvae that leads to moderate to severe histopathological changes in liver and lungs, and mild changes in the muscles and brain.

Conclusion

Our data indicate that the treatment with N. sativa at both doses or the combination dose of N. sativa and albendazole reduced the degree of inflammation and necrosis in liver, lung and brain induced by T. canis infection, lead to a reduction in the percentage of eosinophils, and markedly decreased the elevated liver enzyme levels.

Black Seed in Cuisine

Black seed is the name used for Nigella sativa, an herb in the Ranunculaceae family that produces small black seeds. Black seed is also referred to as nigella, black caraway, black cumin, and fennel flower. Recipes may use whole or crushed seeds.

United States: Black seed is an optional decorative ingredient in one version of the braided challah, a Jewish-style bread loaf served at Shabbat meals. It is commonly used in American cuisine.

Canada: Early settlers of Canada supposedly cultivated black seed extensively and used it as a substitute for nutmeg or pepper.

England: Nigella sativa was brought to England from Egypt in 1548, and its seeds were used as a seasoning.

Poland: In Polish cuisine, black seeds are primarily sprinkled on breads and rolls like poppy seeds.

India: Nigella sativa is commonly used in Indian cuisine to add flavor to curries, korma, and dahl. It is also a part of many spice mixtures, such as the Bengali five-spice, and can be found in Indian breads such as naan. It is also used in casseroles, stews and vegetable dishes.

Egypt: In ancient Egypt, Nigella sativa was sprinkled on breads and rolls. It was also mixed with other grains to make barley meal porridge, food for the afterlife.

Iran: Black seed is used to flavor vinegar, which is then utilized for pickling vegetables such as the torshi-ye leeteh and torshi-ye meeveh.

Lebanon: Black seeds are used to add flavor to cheeses, such as the Lebanese haloumi.

Turkey: A Turkish bread called corek is flavored with Nigella sativa. In most of the Middle East, the black seed is sprinkled on breads and crackers.

Ethiopia: Nigella sativa is cultivated in many provinces of Ethiopia. The seeds are used in flavoring bread and local beverages. Black seed powder is added to berbere sauce ("wot") to mask the pungency of pepper.

Black seed oil for MS

Fakhoury

December 28th, 2010
Hi all, here I would like to report my story with the BLACK SEED OIL. The oil that was capable of curing me out of Multiple Sclerosis! This fact will be followed with MRI reports that will support my point of view.

I was infected with Multiple Sclerosis that has been proven in 2001. At that time I passed through periodical intervals, lasting for 14 seconds, where I was unable to safely use any of my right side parts; Paraesthesia in my right side (Partial numbness, tingling, buzzing and vibration sensations), partial loss of sensation, pain in my right eye causing Diplopia (medical term for double vision), Shaking when performing fine movements … This act remains for three months and reached hard times passing through the stated intervals for 15 seconds every 3 minutes! And the psychiatrist told me that the MS attach was hard.

The MS attack was released after about 3 moths. But many of the symptoms remained

The previously stated intervals passing in a softer state and infecting to me in a rate of 5 to 6 times daily (taking into consideration that I’m living with no hard acts done) otherwise they’ll hit me in a larger number. And these intervals increases after 10:00 pm

Fatigue, a daily lack of energy

These symptoms remained for more than five months and the psychiatrist told me: “The MS symptoms lasting for more than 3 months after the attack are supposed to ever last; you are supposed to manage your life with these symptoms”

Actually I tried to take several types of vitamins to enable me continue my study at university with no use! Actually I was so depressed; I want to continue my life and take my BA in Architectural Engineering but I can’t! I have to submit my late projects that were affected by the period I was passing the MS attack and I have to continue studying

After that I was attending the pharmacy exhibition in our university, and what had caught my attention a project done by a group of First Year Pharmacy about the BLACK SEED OIL

Several facts about the BLACK SEED OIL stated in the project stucked in my mind

The increase in the immunity by 77% for the users of the BLACK SEED OIL. Although I knew that the MS is SUPPOSED to be auto immune, BUT I believed that the BLACK SEED OIL will fix that trouble in the immunity system

The proven ability of the BLACK SEED OIL in providing the body with power. The power that I had lost out of MS and I was in a big need for it

I start taking daily, and orally a table spoon of the black seed oil with a cup of orange juice after it directly; due to the fact that the taste of the BLACK SEED OIL is somehow hard

And here was the shock! After taking this recipe for three days, I was capable of studying up to 2pm! And after 15days I got rid of all the MS symptoms that were not solved by any medication

This sudden change encourages me to search the net about the BLACK SEED OIL where I found fantastic results. You can do that. The most important fact I found is the one stating that the BLACK SEED OIL encourages the body for the production of Interferon.

I remained in taking a tablespoon of the BLACK SEED OIL daily for around 1.5 years although I retained my power after 15 days. But as you can say, the fantastic results I found encourage me on remaining in taking the BLACK SEED OIL as a kind of protection

In the following lines, I will quote words of my MRI reports examinations;

- FIRST MRI EXAMINATION (17-03-2003): There are multiple rounded and oval-shaped lesions ranging from 2mm to 10mm in size involving the corpus callosum. This MRI examination in addition to other examination (mainly the liquid of the stamp) proves my infection with Multiple Sclerosis.

- SECOND MRI EXAMINATION. This examination is done after the first examination in one year. Actually it had proven that the lesions in brain have increased! It was a sudden to me because I was expecting that the BLACK SEED OIL will stop the growth of lesions. But I remained on taking the BLACK SEED OIL; at least it was giving me power.

- THIRD MRI EXAMINATION (12-10-2005): and here was the nice surprise

The ventricular system is not enlarged.

No effect is seen.

No abnormal nodular enhancing lesion is seen.

The cranio cervical junction and the CP are preserved.

The examination proves that the lesions are not increased in size after 2.5 years. More than that, the psychiatrist told me that this examination, compared to the previous one, proves that the lesions in brain are decreased in size. And that is impossible to happen. He told me: “This examination leads me to be suspect with everything I have studied in my life”

At that time, I’ve concluded an important fact; in the second MRI examination that proves the increase of lesions, I have done it after taking the BLACK SEED OIL in 4 months. But there were 8 months in which the multiple sclerosis was acting actively. And case I haven’t taken the BLACK SEED OIL, sure I could examined another MS attack.

- FOURTH MRI EXAMINATION (13-07-2010): After seven years, and upon the request of several members that asked me to do a new MRI examination just as a kind of test, I’ve done an MRI examination and here are some of its states facts;

Normal size and shape of the ventricular system.

No shift of midline structures.

No evidence of intra cerebral bleeding or extra axial collections.

Normal height, signal characteristics and enhancement of pituitary gand. Central pituitary stalk.

No sellar or parasellar masses.

The psychiatrist told me: “The MS in your case is completely stopped. Even in my bed examination to you, nothing appeared.

From this story, I’d like to state several points;

;

I have been living till now, with the proof of the MRI examination for 2.5+5=7.5 years with no MS attack.

The second MRI examination proves that the MS was active and the BLACK SEED OIL has stopped its growth.

In all these years, I haven’t taken any of the proposed medications of the interferon injections.

The BLACK SEED OIL has no side effects. You can check that by a simple yahoo / Google search. Case it hadn’t benefit you (I don’t feel that!) it will not cause you any harm

ABSTRACT
Ninety albino rats were selected and were divided into six groups on the basis of different diets given. Control group (I) was fed on synthetic diet and experimental groups (IIA, IIB, IIC, IID and IIE) were fed on 1 mg aspirin, 15mg, 30 mg, 45 mg Nigella Sativa per kg body weight respectively while IIE was given 30 mg NS and 1 mg aspirin/kg body wt. Blood samples were collected by heart puncture and Coagulation parameters were done. APTT was reduced significantly in groups taking different concentration of NS when compared with control. Percentage of clot retraction was weak significantly in groups taking aspirin only when comparing with other groups.

Key words: Aspirin, Nigella Sativa

INTRODUCTION

Petroleum ether extracts produced significant shortening in the whole blood clotting times and activated partial thromboplastin time. No significant effect was shown on the prothrombin time and thrombin time1. The fatty extract and petroleum ether inhibited the fibrinolytic activity in vivo and in vitro. The mechanism of this effect is not known but it may be due to an inhibitory effect on the activation of plasminogen or inhibiting the plasmin activity2,3,4.
Seeds of Nigella sativa are given with butter and milk to cure obstinate hiccup. Seeds are employed as a purgative. They are also useful in indigestion, loss of appetite, fever, diarrhea, and puerperal disease etc7,8. NS produced significant shortening in kaolin cephalin clotting time. Ether extracts and fatty extract produced a significant shortening in bleeding time5,6.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

Ninety male albino rats were divided into different groups on the basis of diet (Table1). Blood sampling was done at 4th week. Special Haematological investigation (PT, APTT and fibrinogen) were performed.

(DISCUSSION

Prothrombin Time: The mean ± SD values of PT in experimental groups IIA, IIB, IIC IID & IIE were comparable with that of control groups.

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time: The mean ± SD values of APTT in experimental groups taking NS only was significantly (p<0.05) decreased when comparing with control group (IA) at 6th week but comparable in groups taking aspirin at 4th week. This decreased APTT in groups taking Nigella sativa may be due to effect of NS on factors involved in the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Such results are in conformity with the study of Owen et al (1975)1 & Ghoneum et al (1982)5 who also observed similar changes.

Fibrinogen Level: The mean ± SD values of fibrinogen in experimental groups taking different conc of NS and aspirin are comparable when comparing with control group (IA) at 6th week. The comparison between different experimental groups to each other also showed non-significant difference statistically.

Natural cure for hepatitis

Is there a natural cure for asthma ?

As already well-known, there are a few types of Hepatitis, A, B, C, D and E. They all actually lead to and their direct consequence is the liver inflammation. The most widespread type is the Hepatitis C and, along with the types B and D, is a more serious condition. For example, the Hepatitis D can lead to the cirrhosis of the liver. The type A is the mildest since it can be cured during a period shorter than a half of one year. Their characteristic of being highly contagious is essentially important.

If one suspects on this disease, he or she should get familiar with the symptoms and check if a group of them is noticed. Those are high temperature, painful liver, abnormal gas production or bleeding, the urine that is darker than usual, sickness, problems during an intercourse, bad digestion, yellowish skin or eyes, the weaker immune system. But, there are even the psychological negative symptoms that include depression, anxiety, mental and memory instability and general weakness.

This illness can be severe and very difficult to treat, so at the time when the usually prescribed medications cannot wipe out the illness successfully and thoroughly, maybe the attention should be paid to the natural remedies. So, this text is about treating the root of illness, in this case liver and focusing on the natural approach to Hepatitis, strengthening the immune system.

There are several beneficial remedies that come from the nature. Such are, for example, the natural antibiotics (Colloidal Silver and Olive Leaf Capsules), which are multi-functional because they fight bacteria, viruses and fungi and they are powerful anti-oxidants. These remedies are usually combined with the Zell Oxygen treatment, which has the function of making the immune system more resistant and powerful.

The Chinese Reishi Mushroom, which is the main ingredient of the popular Wulingdan Pill, is very beneficial in curing the Hepatitis B and when the liver is severely damaged. But, this mushroom firstly strengthens the immune system, and then encourages the normal blood flow and takes care of the damaged liver. It is good to mention that it has been always beneficial for a lot of disorders through the history of the Chinese medicine.

A good remedy is also the Black Seed Oil that focuses on the liver and digestive-related health problems. But, it is also used to boost-up the immune response. And, of course, it has a range of the beneficial qualities, too.

And finally, the herb that is used in form of tonic is Milk Thistle. Actually, this herb has seeds that contain the ingredient called Silymarin, which provides the protection of the membranes of the liver cells, and therefore, doesn’t allow the toxins to enter a cell. It also encourages the renovation process of the liver.

Black seed oil appreciated once again

Written by ravindesilvaz on Mar-1-11 8:58am

The benefits of Asian ingredients are now slowly but steadily being appreciated by the West. Most spices and such ingredients used for centuries in Asian cooking are now finding a new popularity with westerners and western cooking. Most of ingredients from the Asian region, while enhancing the flavour of food can double as skin and hair beauty products.

For instance coconut oil or even vegetable oil when excellent for frying, when slightly heated and applied to hair is an amazing natural conditioner. Once washed off, hair is visibly softer and silkier. Saffron has been used from ancient times onwards as a skin lightener, making skin it has been applied to vibrant.

Another such wonder ingredient is Black Seed which has found itself in the limelight. The benefits of pure Black Seed oil are limitless, from claims to curing digestive problems, to congestion, headaches, colds, hair and skin problems and some say even diabetes. It is no wonder black seed has found such a popular niche in the health market when the consumption, application and inhalation of this wonderful natural ingredient can supposedly cure so many ailments.

Resembling a sesame seed but with a darker hue it has always been considered by people to have an overall beneficial effect on a person’s health. Its uses as a cure is so varied, that many scientific tests are still being carried out to study and understand its components.

However, the ancients did not need science to prove what they already knew! They knew and understood its importance and used its natural goodness to keep well at a time when antibiotics were unheard of! That is why it can be found in the ‘recipes’ of so many Ayurvedic or such local medicinal concoctions. This in turn is why with a turn-around in the world of health, many people from the west turn to Ayurvedha treatments, to cure their various ailments.

Indeed, opting for this almost miraculous cure seems sensible when compared to the amount of chemicals found in modern medicinal drugs. If pure black seed oil can cure a simple headache why pop a pill that may contain unnecessary chemicals? Ingredients in their natural form are the most beneficial to the human body and it is indeed wonderful that the western world has started to rediscover this. It is at the same time, sad that something that was so simple to our ancestors only comes back to our notice when introduced to us from out as a new product.

However, that maybe the time is now perfect for everyone to re-embrace the benefits of natural cures such as black seed, now available to us in oil, balm, seed and capsule forms. It is also easily available online, so you can browse and research for yourself the benefits and the best options suited to you.

“Hold onto the use of the black seed for in it is healing for all illnesses except death.”

Sahih Bukhari Vol 7 Book 71, 592

Native to the Mediterranean, but cultivated in many parts of Africa, Asia and the Arabian peninsula, Nigella sativa or black seed is increasingly being recognised for its versatile healing properties. Discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb, the medicinal value of black seed oil was recognised as early on as the first century and it continues to arouse much interest today. Ibn Sina (980-1037) refers to black seed as the seed that stimulates the body’s energy and helps recovery from fatigue. This holds true for Tibb (Islamic Medicine) health practitioners.

The rich nutritional value contained in black seed as discovered by scientific analysis also points to it as a great source of energy. From the Tibb health perspective, the black seed has an ability to maintain and restore body heat. Western diets, predominantly made up of cold foods, deplete the innate heat our body requires. Tibb holds the view that a reduced innate heat is the cause of most illnesses. The body, in losing energy, also loses its ability to fight off toxins, resulting in a greater chance of contracting illness. The above hadith, describes the black seed as having a healing for all illnesses. Illnesses arise because of a dysfunctional immune system. Modern research has found the seed to have the ability to boost the immune system and help fight infection. Useful for hypertension, digestive disturbances, bronchitis, asthma, allergies, hay fever, rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases, black seed oil has also been shown to improve anaemia, provide energy and increase mental alertness. It can be used to increase milk production in nursing mothers.

The seed oil has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and boils and is also used to treat cold symptoms. The many uses of black seed has earned for this ancient herb the Arabic approbation habbatul barakah, meaning the seed of blessing.

Note black seed products are not recommended during pregnancy, except under the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner.

BLACK SEED - The blessed seed

Black seed or nigella sativa is also known as kalonji, schwarcummel and habbatul barakah. Legend has it that a bottle of black seed oil was found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen. So it implies that black seed is known for its magical powers for at least 2000 years. The popularity of this blessed seed (as the Arabs like to refer it) enhanced in the land of Arabia. When Prophet Mohammed introduced Muslims with this seed. Islam spread far and wide the use of this seed as medication also increased.

The nutrients found in black seed are numerous; 15 Amino acid, proteins, carbohydrates, oils (both fixed and volatile), alkaloids, saponins, crude fibers and traces of minerals including; calcium, potassium, iron, and sodium

Western medical studies have also given the black seed the go ahead. Black seeds have very little aroma but are carminative, meaning they tend to aid digestion and relieve gases in the stomach and intestine. Besides its capacity to reduce inflammation, improve kidney functions, improve milk production in nursing mothers, strengthen the liver, and increase the body's resistance against diseases, more recent benefits of the black seed includes its potential for the treatment of the bronchial asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory ailments, its capacity to lower excess blood pressure and improve the heart conditions and its antimicrobial activity against a host of a lot of disease causing organisms like E.Coli and Staphylococcus etc. some quarters also suggest that black seed are an affective tool in fighting cancer because it raises the interferon production, protects normal cells against cell destroying effects of viruses, destroys tumor cells and raises the number of anti-bodies producing B cells.

This seed can also be taken by healthy people as it is effective at treating the body as a whole and fights the actual cause of the symptoms. Black seed regulates too weak or too strong reactions of the immune system and is excellent for treating chronic, allergic and hormonal diseases.

Furthermore it is also a great solution for skin problems, like ageing and acne and historians suggesting that Cleopatra used her to enhance her beauty. so we can rightfully say that it is blessed seed.

A scientific test was conducted on 152 patients with allergic diseases such as atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, etc recently in UK. During the test the patients were given black seed oil in capsules. Scientists concluded that black seed oil could prove to be a very effective ingredient for the treatment of allergic diseases.

Black seed oil has also been tested on patients with fungus such as Athlete’s foot, thrush, nail infections, and ringworm. It was concluded that applying black seed oil regularly on the fungus area can clear up the problem.

Application of black seed oil on skin and hair is also a scientifically proven skin and hair care method.

TQ, phospholipids and beta sitosterol are three of the components found in black seed and hence in its oil as well. TQ is considered to be an effective dietary cell-protecting agent. Phospholipids are believed to be excellent supporting components for cellular membrane maintenance. Beta sitosterol has protective effects and it reduces symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Another disease that can be treated by the use of black seed oil is free radicals. Free radicals are formed when a molecule splits in such a way that leaves it with an unpaired electron. Free radicals react quickly and capture the needed electron from the nearest stable molecule making it a free radical itself. Superoxide is the most dangerous and powerful free radical as it requires three electrons to gain stability. Free radicals can accelerate the ageing process and cause damage to our bodies. Black seed oil has been proved to be a powerful scavenger for superoxide free radical.

Black Cumin is in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament

“When he has leveled its surface,
does he not sow the black cumin and scatter the cumin,
plant the wheat in rows, the barley in the appointed place,
and the spelt in its place?”
“For He instructs him in right judgment, his God teaches him.”
“For the black cumin is not threshed with a threshing sledge,
nor is a cartwheel rolled over the cumin;
but the black cumin is beaten out with a stick,
And the cumin with a rod.”
New King James Version of the Bible

Isaiah Chapter 28, Verses 25 to 27

The earliest known reference to Black Cumin is in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament of the Bible, where the sowing and reaping of wheat and Black Cumin are compared. Another early find was as an inclusion in Tutankhamun’s tomb who ruled as the boy king from 1333 BC – 1324 BC. During biblical times the black seeds were used as a spice and were used extensively, during the times of King Tut the use is not known!

The seeds are still consumed today as a spice being included in casseroles and breads; sometimes they are ground and mixed with honey or sprinkled on salads. About a tablespoon of seeds with hot water makes an aromatic cup of tea. A few seeds can be included with any cup of tea to make the flavor more interesting.

Both the herb and the pressed oil from the seeds have been used in herbal medicine for centuries in the Middle East and Africa. They have been used there to treat a wide variety of ailments including: asthma, bronchitis, inflammatory diseases, to increase mother’s milk, to promote digestion, and kill parasitic infections. The oil is directly used to fight skin conditions such as eczema and boils, and to treat upper respiratory colds. Due to its many uses it has been given the Arabic term of “Habbatul barakah,” meaning ‘the seed of blessing.’

Black Seed Oil Benefit...A Powerful Antioxidant

Black Seed Oil Benefit...A Powerful Antioxidant That Can Also Help You Overcome Allergies With Anti-Fungal Properties.

What is the Black seed oil benefit to your health? First, have you ever heard of black-seed-oil before? Not so well known is it?
For over two thousand years the West Asian plant, black seed (also known as black cumin), from the buttercup family, has been traditionally used by various cultures throughout the world as a remedy for several diseases and ailments and to improve general health.
The ancient Egyptians knew all about black seed and described it as a cure for all problems and diseases.

Black seed oil is pressed from the seeds of the black seed plant and black seed oil is quite amazing from cell-protecting to controlling allergic reactions and anti-fungal effects...through to cosmetic use in hair and skin care.

Recent research has concluded that black seed oil benefit could prove to be an effective ingredient to enhance treatment of allergic diseases.

Other benefits are to the prostate. Phytosterol beta sitosterol is a key ingredient in black seed oil, and, although it is not exactly clear how it works,ut research does indicate that it may reduce inflammation and block the build up of cholesterol in the prostate gland itself. However it does not appear to alter the size of the prostate.

Protect Your Body From Dangerous Free Radicals Like Superoxide.

Ok, so we all know what free radicals can do to our bodies? Well the most powerful and dangerous of the free radicals is called....Superoxide!

As we know, free radicals need only one electron from a stable molecule to stabilise itself. But our greedy superoxide free radical isn't satisfied with just one electron to balance itself, oh no...it requires three! Yes, three electrons to balance itself.

Conditions particularly associated with superoxide free radical damage are...

Arthritis
Cancer
Heart Disease
HIV
Neurological (brain and nerves)Disorders
Macular Degeneration (eyes)
... ...So enter our hero, black seed oil. Apparently it acts as a potent free radical scavenger of superoxide.

The word fungus has a negative and embarrasing reputation, however it is quite common for many of us to have it and includes....
Athlete's Foot
Nail Infections
Ringworm
Thrush

Well black seed oil benefit can offer an alternative to the questionable anti-fungal medications and the potential side-effects they can bring such as skin irritation.

One of the major active components of black seed oil is an important phytonutrient called thymoquinone(TQ).
Guess what? TQ is the big player in the anti-fungal war.
Black seed oil is great for healthy hair (taken internally) by regulating various bodily functions. It can also be used topically in a daily skin care routine. Try it as a therapeutic massage oil too.

Respiratory problems? Try rubbing some on your chest.

Pregnant? A word of warning, black seed oil is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Good news for the UK market because black seed is now available from 2006.

Make sure you 'stock up' with black seed oil..your health demands it!

Abstract

Ethnomedical relevance

The anti-inflammatory activity of both systemic and local administrations of essential oil from Nigella sativa L. has been shown.

Aim of the study

Therefore, the effect of Nigella sativa on tracheal responsiveness (TR) and lung inflammation of sulfur mustard (SM) exposed guinea pigs was examined.

Materials and methods

Guinea pigs were exposed to diluent solution (control group), inhaled SM (SME group), SME treated with Nigella sativa (SME + N), SME treated with dexamethasone (SME + D) and SME treated with both drugs (SME + N + D), (n = 7 for each group). TR to methacholine, total white blood cell (WBC) and differential WBC count of lung lavage, and serum cytokines were measured 14 days post-exposure.

Results

The values of TR, eosinophil, monocyte, lymphocyte, interleukine-4 (IL-4) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) of SME group were significantly higher than those of controls (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). The TR in SME + N, SME + D and SME + N + D was significantly lower compared to that of SME group (p < 0.01 for all cases). The percentage of eosinophil in SME + D, and the percentage of monocyte in SME + D + N (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01) were significantly lower than those in SME group. The neutrophil number was decreased in SME + N and SME + N + D groups compared to SME animals (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01). IL-4 levels in serum of SME + N (p < 0.01), SME + D (p < 0.05), SME + N + D (p < 0.01) and IFN-γ in SME + N (p < 0.05) were greater than those in SME animals.

Conclusions

These results showed a preventive effect of Nigella sativa on TR and lung inflammation of SM exposed guinea pigs.

"Anti-cancer Properties

Nigella sativa contains a chemical called thymoquinone that is said to have anti-cancer effects. A 2011 study published in "Cell Biology International" found that thymoquinone has an additive effect on cell destruction when combined with radiation therapy for breast adenocarcinoma and ductal carcinoma. If you have cancer, do not take Nigella sativa without first talking to your doctor, because it may interact with medications. It can also have effects on your platelets, which help with blood clotting, says Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. This can be dangerous if you are on certain cancer medications

Actually, I think a lot of natural remedies/agents that kill cancer cells can have an effect on your "regular" medication: if it isn't active in your body, it can't kill cancer cells; the way those remedies do that may influence your medication.

Hope the more biologically inclined chip in if this is wrong...

However, if your oncologist okays it, you can always try...

Effect of Nigella Sativa Seed Extract on the Blood Pressure of Elderly With Hypertension

Jul 13, 2011
Despite of the development of new anti hypertensive agents, hypertension in elderly is still

a big health problem. Nigella sativa seed extract, derived from a small plant originating in

Middle east which can be found abundantly in Asia, has shown small antihypertensive effect

in adult. Diuretic effect of Nigella sativa is thought to be the main mechanism for the

effect but as it also shows anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory activity which are important

contributors in arterial stiffness, the main pathogenesis of hypertension in elderly, thus

it has a superior potential benefit for this population. We will conduct a randomized,

double blind, placebo-controlled trial to prove the effect of Nigella sativa seed extract in

elderly patients with hypertension. Our hypothesis is 300 mg Nigella sativa seed extract

twice daily will have anti-hypertensive effect in the blood pressure of elderly with

hypertension.

Expert warns against random use of herbal products

RIYADH – A random use of herbal products can prove dangerous, an expert has warned here Thursday.

Dr. Muhammad Bin Abdullah Al-Tefail, head of the Depatment of Pharmacology and Herbs at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center here, said an analyses on complementary and alternative medicine showed that 38 million adults in the US only used natural herbs or supplements in the preceding 12 months.

Dr. Al-Tefail was delivering a lecture here within the activities of Saudi Aramco’s Summer Festival in the capital.

The objective of the study, he said, was to determine subpopulation rates of patients-physicians communication about herbal product and use of natural supplements. Besides, it was meant to identify the relative influence of the interaction factors associated with patient-physician communication about herb and supplement use.

The study, he said, showed the imminent risks of some of the bogus herbal products in the market.

In his lecture entitled, “Herbs Utilizations and Restrictions,” Dr. Al-Tefail highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of different herbs and their ideal utilization methods.

Black caraway (nigella sativa), ginger and olive oil and some other herbs are useful for women during pregnancy and post-pregnancy as well as for diabetic people and those suffering from high cholesterol, he said.

He said medical herbs are used in pharmaceutical industry where chemists and pharmacists extract the ingredients from herbs. The pharmacists dispense the final products to patients.

Thus he warned the public about herbs provided by perfumeries and herbalists because they are not purified and contain dangerous components. The herbalist usually mix the herbs with other components which are distinguished by high toxicity which causes great damage to the organs, Dr. Al-Tefail said.

Referring to a study, the expert said it was encouraging to find more and more patients are now using herbs and other supplements for treatment of chronic cases. Here too the expert has a word of caution: the physicians regularly treating the patients should be informed of the use of herbs and supplements since it could be dangerous if they are being taken alongside the traditional medicines. – SG/SPA __

Nigella Sativa for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Overview

Some individuals find complementary and alternative medicines are beneficial supplements to their prescribed treatments for a variety of conditions. Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis may find the supplement Nigella sativa helpful for symptoms, but it may not be effective or appropriate for everyone. Before using any supplement, talk with your doctor about whether it is safe for you to consume.

Nigella Sativa

Nigella sativa is also known as black cumin, and in addition to being used in traditional medicine, it is also a spice. According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, this plant and its seeds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties. It may also be helpful in treating diarrhea, asthma and high blood pressure. More research needs to be done on the full health properties of Nigella sativa, so talk with your doctor before using this supplement to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you to take.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, commonly called RA, is an autoimmune form of inflammatory arthritis, states the Arthritis Foundation. This means your own body attacks its tissues, and in RA, the membranes lining the joints called synovium are attacked, causing pain and inflammation. This pain and swelling can then spread throughout the body. RA cannot be cured, but medication can help control the condition. If it is caught and treated early enough, permanent joint damage may be avoided and the chances of remission are high, says the Arthritis Foundation. Medications may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs; corticosteroids; biologic agents and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, called DMARDs. While these cannot get rid of RA, different drugs can ease symptoms and slow the progression of the condition.

Nigella Sativa Effects

A compound called thymoquinone can be derived from the seeds of Nigella sativa, and studies show this substance helps decrease inflammation, a key symptom in RA. A 2011 study in the "Journal of Cellular Biochemistry" found that rats with induced RA that were treated with thymoquinone had decreased arthritis scoring and bone resorption. A 2007 study in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" found that rats that were given thymoquinone suppressed the induced RA, compared to rats who did not get the thymoquinone. Research with human subjects still needs to be done, and this compound may not work for everyone. Ask your doctor whether Nigella sativa may have any benefits for your situation.
